Try This Pilsner Recipe This Summer

With summer in full swing, our go to beer is a nice, cold pilsner. A nice combination of bitterness and flavor makes it easy to recommend for someone looking for a crisp, refreshing beer after coming in from mowing the lawn and today we’d like to share one of our favorite beer recipes with you.

We know that all of you professional brewers out there haven’t lost your love for home brewing, so break out your boil pot, your thermometer, and your racking cane, and get to work on the best thing you’ll drink this summer.

Our favorite pilsner recipe comes courtesy of Randy Mosher’s book Radical Brewing and we first discovered it on the American Homebrewers Association’s website (which, by the way, is invaluable if you’re going to be doing any amount of home brewing). The recipe makes 5 gallons of Polka Dot Pilsner:

  • 5.5 lb (2.5 kg) | pale dry extract (the best quality you can find)
  • 2.5 oz (71 g) | Saaz hops, 3% alpha acid (60 minutes)
  • 2.5 oz (71 g) | Saaz hops, 3% alpha acid (15 minutes)
  • 1 oz (28 g) | Saaz hops, 3% alpha acid (0 minutes/end of boil)
  • Czech lager yeast

Simply follow the directions provided in the link above, and six to eight weeks later, you’ll be basking in sweet pilsner-y goodness. Its distinctive golden color and refreshing taste are the perfect complement to your summer barbecue or weekly poker night this summer.
